March 2009 - Intelligent Transport Conference
Eon de Koker presented the topic: -The role of RFID in Intelligent Transport Systems-. The talk included an overview of current passive and active RFID implementations in Intelligent Transport Systems in the USA and Europe, related international standards as well as market trends. Examples were also shown of how passive RFID technology was replacing active in the USA in tolling applications, due its lower operational cost. In Europe the challenge of operating tolling in the European Union is to make the systems deployed in the various countries interoperable. Since existing European systems use predominantly active technology, European standards only supports active (legacy) technology. Apart from the e-tag used by Bakwena in South Africa, there are no legacy active RFID deployed in South Africa. We therefore have the unique opportunity to select the better option.
